From a teen in the U.S.: I worry that I may have Schizophrenia because I am a twin which increase my chances and I have a family history of Schizophrenia in both my Grandma and Great-Grandma. I’ve been analyzing myself, paying attention to every single detail around me as much as I can. I’ve noticed that i have many symptoms similar to the symptoms of schizophrenia. I’ve been experiencing hallucinations and delusions, mainly religious delusions. Sometimes I feel like everyone hates me, and they are out to get me. I also have thoughts that I can’t control myself as well. My thoughts are always a huge mess and impossible to explain. It’s very difficult for me to express my emotions, and often, it feels like I can’t even feel them or they don’t exist.
A: I’m very glad you wrote. A little knowledge about family history or from an internet search is sometimes not helpful. You are upsetting yourself by all this self-analysis. Even if you are correct that you are symptomatic, knowing that doesn’t help you deal with it.
I suggest that you make an appointment with a mental health counselor for a thorough evaluation. A counselor will help you determine if you do have schizophrenia or if maybe you are so sensitive to the possibility that you are over-thinking normal teen issues. Either way, the counselor will also offer you guidance for how to deal effectively with whatever is going on with you.
Please make that appointment right away. You deserve the peace of mind.
I wish you well.
