About the Psych Central Podcasts
The first episode of The Psych Central Podcast aired on November 3, 2016, with Psych Central founder Dr. John Grohol. At the time, we were brand new to podcasting and weren’t sure what to expect. But after a good deal of trial and error, we determined that what people wanted was psychology explained simply. Our listeners told us they wanted engaging guest experts who could illuminate and explain something about relationships, mental health, mental illness, or psychology that added something to their life.
Host Gabe Howard helped craft that focus. “I thought of my father, honestly,” he says. “When I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he needed information that was both accurate and easy to understand. He’s not a reader, but he loves watching and listening to educational programs. He’s the audience I picture in my head when I interview our guests.”
The success of The Psych Central Podcast made it feasible to launch another podcast, Not Crazy, co-hosted by Jackie Zimmerman and Gabe. “We felt the first podcast did a great job capturing the medical aspects of mental illness but not so great at capturing what it’s like to live with mental illness. So Not Crazy was born.”
I believe that both podcasts serve a unique listener base and complement our ongoing 25-year mission of sharing relevant, objective mental health content from multiple perspectives.
