From a teen in Canada: I don’t know what could be possibly going on with me. For most of my life I’ve had issues with regulating my moods. My mood swings typically go from depressed (I am usually suicidal in this state) then to normal, then to extreme irritability and anger. These mood swings can last anywhere between a few hours to a few days. These issues have severely disrupted my family life, job and college life. When I am experiencing stress, I hear voices and feel like I’m not myself or “floaty”. But it only happens when I’m stressed. I have an extremely low tolerance for stress and I can’t deal with minor issues without crashing into a depression or flying into a rage. I also have really bad episodes of anxiety. My emotions are extreme and I have difficulty controlling them. I also have an extensive history of self-harm, mainly through cutting. These issues are controlling my life and I don’t know what to do.
A. What you do is find a therapist. You have suffered far too long. I can’t give a diagnosis on the basis of a letter. But I can tell you that what you are reporting is consistent with Borderline Personality Disorder. Do some research and see if it resonates. If so, the good news is that there is a well researched, well documented treatment: Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I’m sure there is a therapist near you who can both confirm or deny my guess and who can give you some treatment options.
Please, take care of yourself and see a therapist. You are at a stage of life where the brain is undergoing a major growth spurt and pruning. This is a great time to do some solid therapy work and to set your life on a different path.
I wish you well.
