Let’s take a moment and really think about what you are doing in your private practice right now. Think of it as a piece of art that you shape over time, adding layers and textures.
Do you like what you are creating?
Is it beautiful?
Is it inspiring?
Is it invigorating?
You look to the top of it, and notice a dull edge. That little area is a problem area. Does it ruin the whole piece of art? No, but sure is distracting.
Often times private practices have a lot going for them. There is a lot of good. But when a system is off within the business, it can really burden the artist, the therapist who is trying to create their vision.
I see it with therapists who carry shame about not completing their notes. I see it in the therapist who doesn’t know their numbers and the thought makes their stomach just sink. I see it in the therapist who can’t understand why clients don’t stick around long.
They feel they can’t deal or understand. They think they aren’t smart enough.
They take on the burden.
But they forget they are capable. They are still learning and there is no shame in that. Hiding just compounds the problem areas.
My favorite private practice is the one that continues to shape over time.
It never stops learning, tweaking, and improving. That alone makes it beautiful. It takes those dull edges, finds where they started and goes back to make a correction. That’s it.
They don’t throw the whole piece of art away.
Art is a process.
It never ends and neither do you, your craft and your business.
Be willing to look at what you are creating and respond to it. Don’t run away. It will still be there and your internal dialogue is going to turn this simple issue into a monster. That’s no fun trust me.
And if you need help, get it. Don’t wait.
