Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Requirements

An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a very beneficial credential to have when working in the behavior analysis field as well as in any field in which you are working with children or adults, specifically in the behavior health, healthcare, or other supportive services fields.

You can view the RBT requirements directly on the BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) website. The BACB informs us that to obtain the RBT credential you must meet certain criteria. These criteria include particular education and training requirements.

You must do the following activities in order to become a Registered Behavior Technician:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must demonstrate that you have completed high school (or a higher level of education).
  • You must complete an approved 40 hour RBT training course.
  • The training course must be based on the RBT Task List (which identifies all of the skill areas necessary for an RBT to be knowledgeable about).
  • The RBT Candidate must complete a Competency Assessment which includes a BCBA observing and evaluating whether the individual can demonstrate and understands all of the items on the RBT Task List.
  • The Competency Assessment can’t be completed until the training course is complete.
  • The individual must have a completed criminal background check.
  • The indiviudal must also complete a child abuse registry clearance.
  • The individual must complete an 85 question exam after all other requirements are complete. The exam takes up to 1.5 hours to complete.

Again, for more information about the RBT credential, visit the BACB website. The RBT credential is truly a great opportunity and is very do-able for anyone interested in working with people in general, but especially with children with disabilities, special needs, and even typically developing children.
