How Do I Find a Therapist?

From a man in the U.S.: I’m 60 and I am looking for a nearby therapist who is well trained in and follows CBT similar to the University of Penn CBT program by Dr. Beck. Preferred someone who takes BC/BS Any suggestions?

Thank you for asking. The first thing to do is to ask your medical doctor for a referral. Physicians often are aware of local therapists who are helpful.

Another resource is here at PsychCentral. Go to the homepage. Click on “Find Help”. Click on “Find a Therapist” on the dropdown menu. The directory there may help you find a local therapist who meets your specifications.

The Association for Cognitive and Behavioral therapies also maintains a therapist locator. Go to their website to see if there is someone near you.

Meanwhile, I do suggest that you read Dr. Beck’s book if you haven’t already. Understanding the basic principles will jump start your therapy.

I wish you well.
