I have been feeling unhappy for about two years now, but i have only just opened up to my mum about how i feel. The school have recommended i go seek help however my mum seems to be avoiding the subject of my mental health is there any way i could do something myself?
A. You should not give up on asking your mother for help. You can tell her that you wrote to us here at Psych Central. If she knew, she might take your request more seriously.
You should also discuss this issue again with the school official who recommended treatment. They should have already contacted your mother. They might be able to explain to your mother why she should take you to treatment.
You might also write your mother a letter explaining the nature of your feelings and why you want help. Sometimes parents consider these types of problems a “phase,” failing to appreciate the nature of their child’s struggles. Explain it to her in as much detail as possible. Don’t hold back. She needs to know the truth. It might help her to understand what you’re going through.
Revisiting this issue, with your mother and with the school official(s) who recommended treatment, should convince your mother to follow the recommendations of the school.
In the meantime, you might try journaling. Studies suggest that writing can be a psychologically beneficial process. It helps to clarify one’s thinking and to sort through one’s problems. It’s also good to have a written record of your thoughts. That would be especially helpful for counseling purposes.
I hope these ideas are helpful, if only in some small way. If you need additional assistance, don’t hesitate to write again. Thank you for your question. Please take care.
