Stop.
Grab a pen.
Make a list of the five people you talk to the most.
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Done? Excellent!
In a 2007 study, some scientists discovered that obesity spreads. Investigators found that when our closes friends become obese, we have a 57% chance of following in their footsteps.
Holy Smokes.
(Before you get up in arms, take a breath. This article isn’t about fat-shaming or ridiculously impossible body standards or what you should or shouldn’t look like. Read on.)
This study revealed just how powerful our social circles are. If you want to know where you’ll be in five years, take a look at who you’re spending your time with and find the answer there.
Want to guess how much income someone earned last year? Take the average of the five people they’re closest to.
Curious about your colleague’s full fee? Check out the full fee of those they’re hanging with.
Wondering if your consultant has a riveting sex life? Look at who she spends the most time with and voila, the question will appear. (And also, weird.)
The point is this: The five people you surround yourself with most often have a disproportionate impact on your personal and professional life.
Want to level up your private practice? You’ve got to surround yourself with people who are where you want to be.
Now, go back and look at your list. Are the people on this list a representation of who you want to become?
Of course, this can bring up all kinds of doubts, frustrations and fears:
“Does this mean I have to ditch my best friends?!”
“Just because someone is making great money doesn’t mean they’re perfect!”
“Why would someone who has already gotten to Point C want to hang out with me over here at Point A?!”
Over the next few weeks, I’m going to dive into these questions and more. I will show you how leveling up your professional circles can have a profound impact on the state of your private practice. I’ll walk you through how to surround yourself with movers and shakers, without abandoning those you love.
If you want a profound private practice, where you are charging premium fees, working with the clients who fill you with joy, getting those monthly massages and taking your three day weekends for granted, then forming relationships with therapists who have made this happen is the #1 thing that will help you get there.
Let’s go!
